Finding My Strength

One of my favorite songs by Whitney Houston is "I Didn't Know My Own Strength.”

When writing my poem, I Wasn’t Built To Break, I was thinking about the words to this song. The lyrics speak to who I am as a person. I did not let it stop me from pursuing my dreams. I learned that I have to hold on to hope. These lyrics speak to my life story.

Having a disability can make you question who you are. As a child, it was hard for me to understand the person that was within me. I didn't quite see the wonderful light shining down from within.

Doubting and comparing myself to others came to my mind. I was worrying about how people would perceive me as being someone with a disability. I encourage you to know that no matter what you face don’t give up. When I was younger, I encountered a lot of obstacles. I was able to overcome my challenges because of the faith that I have in who I am.

Never have I ever thought that I would be a motivational speaker. Ever since I was little, I have been going to Speech Therapy. It is hard for me to say certain sounds. However, over the years, I have been working on my dictation. I also have been trailing different communication devices.

This year, I found the right Argumentative device that best works for me. Now, I am giving presentations to college-level classes. There are times when you are given a life that you never imagined. I have accepted the person I have become. The fact that I have Cerebral Palsy sets me apart from other people. I now realize that I am enough just the way I am. I have found the strength that my creator predestined me to have.

My strength has remained with me and will remain with me forever.
